Arris Rail Fencing vs Closeboard Fence Panels

How traditional closeboard fencing built on site compares with pre-made closeboard fence panels.

Arris Rail Fencing vs Closeboard Fence Panels

Closeboard fencing can be installed in two main ways: as a traditional arris rail fence built on site, or using pre-made closeboard fence panels. Both give a strong, attractive finish, but the best option depends on the garden, ground level and type of installation.

Closeboard Fence Panels

Closeboard fence panels are pre-made sections, usually supplied in standard widths of around 6ft / 1.83m. They are built using vertical feather edge boards fixed to horizontal backing rails, then installed between posts.

They are a good choice for straightforward fence runs where the ground is reasonably level. Because the panels are made in advance, they are quick to install and give a neat, consistent appearance.

Closeboard panels are ideal for:

However, on steep gradients, panels can become more awkward. They normally need to be stepped down from post to post, which can leave triangular gaps underneath unless gravel boards or additional cutting are used.

Traditional Arris Rail Fencing

Arris rail fencing is built directly on site. Instead of fitting pre-made panels, the posts are installed first, then triangular arris rails are fixed between the posts. Feather edge boards are then nailed individually to the rails.

This method is especially useful where the ground is uneven or sloping, because the fence can be built to follow the shape of the garden more closely. The feather edge boards can be adjusted as the fence is built, giving a more tailored finish.

Arris rail fencing is ideal for:

Because it is built piece by piece, arris rail fencing can take longer to install than panel fencing, but it gives more flexibility and can be stronger over difficult ground.

Key Differences

Feature Closeboard Panels Arris Rail Fencing
Built Pre-made panels Built on site
Typical width Around 6ft / 1.83m per panel Built between posts
Rails Flat backing rails Triangular arris rails
Best for Level gardens Slopes and uneven ground
Installation speed Usually quicker Usually slower
Finish on gradients Usually stepped Can follow the ground better
Flexibility Standard sizes More customisable

Which One Should You Choose?

For a simple, level garden, closeboard panels are often the most practical option. They are strong, tidy and cost-effective.

For sloping gardens, awkward boundaries or a more traditional heavy-duty fence, arris rail fencing is often the better choice. It can be built to suit the land rather than forcing standard panels to fit.

At Garden City Fencing, we can advise which option suits your garden best and recommend the right method based on the ground, fence height, access and finish required.
